My experiences upgrading from 3Com/USR Palm Pilot Professional to Palm III

I just traded up to the Palm III from the Palm Pilot Professional which I gave to my parents (hand me down?). The Palm III is essentially the Palm Pilot Professional with more memory, a flip top, a infrared port, a new heavier stylus, three new fonts (different sizes), volume control, and an extra piece of plastic which protects the hot sync port.

The transition has been a very smooth one. All I did was change to the new hot sync cradle popped the Palm III in place and used the old hot sync software, and voila, I had my pilot up and running like the old Professional one within 10 minutes of taking the Palm III out of the box.

I don't really notice a difference in the speed of the Palm III, and I don't notice a chance in size or weight, although it has been reported to be slightly heavier and larger with the flip top.

The flip top works great - it actually saves space because I don't need to carry the vinyl case around to protect the screen. The new stylus looks great - metallic look and is heavier which results with more accurate graffiti writing. The stylus is now housed in the back of the unit and does not fit old styli. All my previous software: J-file, aportis, metricalc, mathpad all work perfectly with the new Palm III.

I haven't tried the infrared port yet, but I'm sure I will very soon in the future, because many of the people I've seen at work have the Palm III.

It still takes 2 AAA batteries and still does not have a back up battery system.
